- OpenAI Unveils ‘Deep Research’ for ChatGPT as DeepSeek Intensifies AI Competition
The race for AI dominance is heating up as OpenAI introduces its latest tool, Deep Research, just as China’s DeepSeek gains momentum. Announced ahead of key meetings in Tokyo, this new feature aims to revolutionize research efficiency for ChatGPT users.
With DeepSeek making waves in the AI world due to its high performance and competitive pricing, US tech leaders are pushing the boundaries to stay ahead. OpenAI, the pioneer behind ChatGPT, has now unveiled Deep Research, a tool designed to streamline research tasks.
According to OpenAI, Deep Research can accomplish in minutes what would typically take humans hours. This advanced agent works independently, allowing users to input a query while ChatGPT searches, analyzes, and synthesizes data from hundreds of online sources to generate comprehensive, research-level reports.
In a live demonstration, OpenAI researchers showcased how the tool curates information—for example, helping users select the best ski equipment for a holiday in Japan by analyzing web data.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman is currently in Tokyo, where he is set to meet with Japan’s Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba and Masayoshi Son, the head of SoftBank Group. Their discussions will likely focus on AI investments and infrastructure development in Japan.
SoftBank and OpenAI are both contributing to the Stargate AI initiative, a project announced by former US President Donald Trump, aiming to invest up to $500 billion in AI infrastructure within the United States.
Additionally, Altman and Son will address around 500 Japanese businesses at a forum in Tokyo, expected to reveal plans for establishing AI data centers and power plants to support the nation’s AI expansion.
Apart from software advancements, Altman has expressed interest in developing a new type of AI-powered hardware in collaboration with Jony Ive, Apple’s former chief design officer. However, he noted that a prototype would take several years to materialize.
Meanwhile, DeepSeek’s rapid rise has sparked debates, with some accusing it of reverse-engineering the AI models powering ChatGPT. OpenAI has also warned that Chinese firms are aggressively working to replicate its technology, prompting increased cooperation between OpenAI and US authorities to safeguard its advancements.
With the AI landscape evolving at an unprecedented pace, Deep Research is OpenAI’s latest move to stay ahead in the game and redefine how we interact with AI-driven insights.
