Bambu Lab Security Update: OrcaSlicer Access Restricted

Bambu Lab recently rolled out a firmware security update for its 3D printers, introducing a new “authorization control” system for critical operations. This change aims to reduce risks of remote hacking, prevent printer exposure, and mitigate abnormal traffic or attacks.

The update blocks access to popular 3rd party software and hardware, including OrcaSlicer and BigTreeTech’s Panda Touch screen. Instead, users must now use Bambu Connect, a proprietary tool designed to act as a secure one-way interface between the printer and connected devices.

While users of Bambu Studio, the company’s official slicer, remain unaffected, those relying on third-party options will face significant changes, including:

• No remote detection of filament type or color.
• Manual coordination for filament painting and other tasks.
• Limited monitoring via Bambu Connect without webcam access.

Critical Operations Requiring Authorization

The following functions now demand secure authorization and are inaccessible through 3rd party tools:

• Printer binding and unbinding.
• Remote video access.
• Firmware upgrades.
• Print job initiation via LAN or cloud.
• Motion system, temperature, and AMS settings control.

Why the Update?

Bambu Lab emphasizes that these updates are critical to protecting users from malicious attacks. According to the company, unauthorized requests—often exceeding 30 million per day—have created strain on their infrastructure. These requests may include interactions from third-party software like OrcaSlicer.

“By ensuring all critical hardware interactions are verified and secure, we can prevent potential risks, including those arising from unauthorized access to the printer’s heating components and moving parts,” Bambu Lab explained in their blog.

Impact on LAN Connectivity

Even in LAN mode, third-party access is blocked, as Bambu Lab states that devices connected to public networks could still be vulnerable. This change aims to prevent unauthorized individuals from exploiting access to critical printer operations.
