- Bambu Lab Security Update: OrcaSlicer Access Restricted
The update blocks access to popular 3rd party software and hardware, including OrcaSlicer and BigTreeTech’s Panda Touch screen. Instead, users must now use Bambu Connect, a proprietary tool designed to act as a secure one-way interface between the printer and connected devices.
While users of Bambu Studio, the company’s official slicer, remain unaffected, those relying on third-party options will face significant changes, including:
The following functions now demand secure authorization and are inaccessible through 3rd party tools:
Bambu Lab emphasizes that these updates are critical to protecting users from malicious attacks. According to the company, unauthorized requests—often exceeding 30 million per day—have created strain on their infrastructure. These requests may include interactions from third-party software like OrcaSlicer.
“By ensuring all critical hardware interactions are verified and secure, we can prevent potential risks, including those arising from unauthorized access to the printer’s heating components and moving parts,” Bambu Lab explained in their blog.
Even in LAN mode, third-party access is blocked, as Bambu Lab states that devices connected to public networks could still be vulnerable. This change aims to prevent unauthorized individuals from exploiting access to critical printer operations.
While these changes prioritize user safety and printer security, they may limit flexibility for users relying on third-party tools. As Bambu Lab strengthens its security protocols, users will need to adapt to the new system to ensure safe and efficient operation of their 3D printers.
