Mexico Develops App to Help Migrants Alert Consulates and Families of Imminent U.S. Detention
In an effort to protect its citizens, Mexico is developing a mobile app aimed at helping migrants notify their families and local consulates if they are about to be detained in the United States. This app, called the “Alert Button,” is expected to be available starting in January, just as the incoming U.S. administration prepares to implement stricter deportation policies.
The app will allow users to immediately alert the nearest Mexican consulate, notify selected family members, and report the situation to the Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs. It is a significant step in providing support to migrants who may be at risk of detention under the new U.S. administration.
The app was developed by the Mexican Digital Transformation Agency in collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. According to Juan Ramón de la Fuente, Mexico’s Secretary of Foreign Affairs, this app is designed for emergency use, offering crucial protection during times of heightened uncertainty.
De la Fuente also emphasized the importance of upholding due process, highlighting that a formal court order and final deportation sentence are necessary before anyone can be deported from the U.S. As the U.S. prepares for potentially mass deportations, Mexico remains committed to safeguarding the rights of its citizens.
This initiative comes as part of Mexico’s broader efforts to ensure the protection of migrants in the face of stricter U.S. immigration policies under the upcoming Trump administration. The app is expected to be an essential tool for migrants to manage emergency situations and seek help when needed.
